Supreme court grant financial autonomy to LGs,brands state governors as "dangerous specie"

Justice Emmanuel Agim of the Supreme Court of Nigeria read the judgement verdict of the suit filed by the FG against the State governors, seeking financial autonomy for all the 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria. His Lordship granted the local government areas, the desired financial autonomy and they will receive receiving direct allocation from RFMAC. The Lead judge also submitted that these funds is solely meant for democratically-elected LGAs Administration and that caretaker committee institituted by a state governor cannot access this allocation.

Furthermore, The judge branded the state governors as "dangerous specie" that endangers the existence of the LGAs, starving them funds to drive developmental projects, emphasizing that it's unconstitutional for governors to hold LGAs fund. He also said that as LGAs will be receiving their allocation directly from the source to enhance infrastructural developments at the grassroot level.

As this verdict comes into implementation, the fate of the LCDAs in Lagos,Osun and Ondo states is daisy as we speak, since LCDAs are the creation of state govts. Can the states reach a truce with the LGAs to share their direct allocation with the LCDAs since they are created from them? Will this not lead to crisis between the state governors and the LGAs? Who will now conduct the LGAs election? Would the state governors still be able to influence LGAs election going forward? These are pertinent questions begging for honest, practicable answers.

Neverthess, More explanations will be pouring in, on this subject matter as time goes on. it is expedient that the LGAs operates on it's own accord with the supervision of the state governors and eyes will be on the chairmen of the LGAs, holding them accoutable on their direct monthly allocation. The LGAs doesn't have any excuse to under-perform or not perform in office NOW.

We hope that this victory won't be only on paper, that it will be implemented to the latter so that we won't be running round in circle again.

MOSCHINOBLOG wishes the LGAs "Best of Luck"
